Tokyo String Quartet — in their final season
We open our season with one of the truly great ensembles in the world today—the legendary Tokyo String Quartet. This will be the last year that devoted audiences worldwide will get to hear this extraordinary group in live performance, as the Tokyo String Quartet has decided that its extraordinary 44-year history will officially come to an end at the close of this season. Thereafter, we will have to content ourselves with the Tokyo's legacy of more than 40 award-winning recordings.
SFCM has particularly warm feelings for the Tokyo String Quartet because we heard them in the late 1970s when they were still students at the Juilliard School of Music. The Juilliard String Quartet, scheduled to play in Syracuse, had had to cancel due to illness, and the Juilliard's Robert Mann encouraged SFCM's then music director Louis Krasner to substitute an extraordinary young Japanese quartet that was studying with them. "You won't be sorry," Mann assured Krasner. He was right: the audience was ecstatic. This will be the Tokyo String Quartet's 14th—and final—concert for SFCM.
"At times, the music was close to magical. The entire performance was a model of focus and moderation, gripping from the first measure to the last." —The Ottawa CitizenHaydn Quartet in D Major, Op. 20, No. 4, "Sun"
"Over the past 40 years, The Tokyo String Quartet has built a welll-deserved reputation for rock-solid ensemble playing and immaculate razor-edged precision." —The Washington Post
