Where: First Unitarian Universalist Society, 250 Waring Rd., Syracuse
Application deadline: February 19, 2016. There is no entry fee for this competition.
(Online application will be available by mid-September.)

Rules

Participating students must be in 7-12th grade and enrolled in a New York school district within 90 miles of Syracuse or home schooled in one of those districts (this includes Ithaca, Utica, Watertown, and Rochester).

Ensembles must be comprised of 3 to 8 musicians playing on standard orchestral instruments. Ensembles competing in past years have included string trios and quartets, trios and quartets that include piano, woodwind and brass quintets, woodwinds with strings, and ensembles of all the same instrument (e.g., cello or saxophone quartet).

We prefer repertoire that has been composed for the designated instruments—arrangements and transcriptions are discouraged. The piece or pieces performed must have contrasting sections, with one to three movements, and with a total duration of 5 to 15 minutes.

Each ensemble must have a coach. Coaching is available through schools, private teachers, and membership in Junior Pro Art.

Two musical scores must be presented to the judges.

All competing ensembles will receive written evaluations from our two judges. The judges may exercise their discretion concerning the length of ensembles' presentations at the audition and at the concert.

The judges will select a single "Best Ensemble", if any qualify. If any of the students in that ensemble attend school in a school district more than 35 miles from Syracuse, then the judges may also select a "Best Central New York Ensemble" from among the Central New York ensembles. (Canastota, Fulton, Auburn and Cortland are all within the 35-mile "Central New York" radius.)

Each of the musicians in the "Best Ensemble" (and the "Best Central New York Ensemble", if different) will be awarded $50, and a photograph of the ensemble(s) will appear at the SFCM website.

At the discretion of the judges, the "Best Ensemble" will perform its winning selection(s) on Saturday evening, April 2, 2016, at the Syracuse Friends of Chamber Music concert at H. W. Smith School, and an insert for the program will identify the ensemble members and their coach or coaches. The ensemble will perform at 7:30 PM, before the featured professional ensemble, the Prima Trio.

The decisions of the judges are final.

You will be notified about your audition time. You may request a particular audition time, and we will try to accommodate your request.
